LIFE SCIENCES

v5_15

FLORA & FAUNA

Life Sciences teach us about living organisms, from the tiny – like bacteria – to the massive – like blue whales. What can we learn about these organisms to better understand evolutionary processes, satiate our curiosities, and protect Earth’s biosphere? Although a combination of Earth & Life Sciences, we also include the study of life that once was, such as dinosaurs and prehistoric man.

Reading genomes with machine learning

The human genome comprises 3 billion nucleotides of information that outline how to construct and continue to live as a human. ~2% of those nucleotides code for proteins, which perform the bulk of the work to be done in the cell. The remaining 98% contains instructions for where and when to turn those proteins on […]

Meditation reduces pain, and blocking opioid receptors makes that effect even stronger!

Describe your research and the big picture problem or puzzle it addresses. Over the last 10 years, a series of well-designed laboratory studies using pain induction and healthy meditation practitioners have shown that meditation can be helpful for dealing with pain. When meditators are given the same kind of stimulation and pain is compared before vs. […]

Using spectroscopy to identify the bugs that make (or spoil) wine

Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the ‘sugar mold,’ is used to convert sugar to alcohol in wine and beer fermentation. In the wine business, it is a common refrain that “the wine is made in the vineyard.” This is meant to suggest that good wine ultimately relies on good grapes. It’s not clear that this maxim is true, […]

Learning the regulatory code of the human genome

The human genome comprises 3 billion nucleotides of information that outline how to construct and continue to live as a human. ~2% of those nucleotides code for proteins, which perform the bulk of the work to be done in the cell. The remaining 98% contains instructions for where and when to turn those proteins on […]

Software for genome wrangling

Describe your research and the big picture problem or puzzle it addresses. You probably hear about “new” genomes being sequenced all the time now. The DNA sequences of so many species have become available lately, it’s hard to keep up. And traditional publication methods don’t really help you to explore all that sequence information. What […]

Social Transfer of Pain in Mice

This manuscript characterizes the first model of socially transferred pain in which mice housed in the same room as mice subjected to inflammatory- or drug withdrawal-induced pain develop congruent hyperalgesia. This pain is communicated via olfactory cues. This model provides 3 For the pain field, we show that pain can be induced solely by […]

Life-threatening diarrheal diseases continue to be major causes of childhood mortality in the developing world: Study on novel associations

Diarrheal diseases can be life-threatening, and continue to contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality in infants and young children in developing countries. There is an urgent need to better understand the contributions of novel, potentially uncultured, diarrheal pathogens, or microorganisms that may cause disease, to severe diarrheal disease, as well as distortions in normal gut […]
